Kiwis’ Choice for As Built Survey

As licensed surveyors, we conduct as-built surveys to accurately validate the precise locations and mapping points for all components of an infrastructure project; both during the construction phase and upon its completion.

Definition Surveying is the go-to NZ team that provides detailed as-built survey plans for developers, building and construction companies, property owners, as well as local councils for infrastructure projects.

We also conduct immediate surveys in instances where unforeseen circumstances arise and require amendments to the construction plans documenting new coordinates on the site plan.

As Built Survey

What is the Purpose of an As-Built Survey?

The purpose of as-built surveys is to compare the constructed elements with the original design or specifications to ensure that the building or project has been executed according to the approved plans. These surveys provide valuable information for property owners, developers, architects, and regulatory authorities to maintain accurate records of the constructed projects.

This survey is essential for ensuring accuracy in property records, facilitating property transactions, and serving as a reference for future modifications or additions. Additionally, there are occasions when it proves advantageous to perform an as-built survey to assess the work carried out by builders, excavators, and service installers.

Detailed Contour Survey

Determining the precise lay of the land is crucial during the planning and feasibility study phase of any construction project. Contour surveys play a pivotal role in understanding the site's structure and how terraforming aligns with the engineering design. This survey provides a visual grasp of the vertical and horizontal shape of the land, predicting water flow patterns during rainfall, identifying areas where water may collect or erode the soil, and determining optimal locations for access roads.

As licensed surveyors in Invercargill, we conduct contour surveys alongside as-built surveys on behalf of property owners and local councils. Our process involves aerial contour mapping using drones to uncover topographical features that traditional surveying might overlook, such as hidden gullies, streams, natural watercourses, old abandoned tracks, and inaccessible areas. We map out the contour lines conducted via aerial survey in as-built plans which helps developers, engineers, and local Councils to identify topographical features before commencing any construction on a particular piece of land.

How To Read Contour Lines On A Survey Map?

Reading contour lines on a map is essential for understanding the topography of a terrain. Contour lines represent the elevation changes of the land and provide crucial information about the slope, shape, and features of the landscape.

  • Contour Intervals - Contour lines are typically drawn at regular intervals, indicating a change in elevation. The vertical distance between two contour lines is called the contour interval and is usually specified in the map's legend.
  • Slopes – Closer contour lines indicate steep terrain; the closer the contour lines the steeper the terrain. Widely spaced lines represent gentle slopes or flat areas.
  • Ridges and Valleys – U-shaped contour lines represent ridges and V-shaped lines represent valleys. The closed end of the U or V represents uphill.
  • Streams and Rivers – Blue lines on the map represent water bodies such as rivers, lakes, streams, etc. The direction of flow is indicated by V-shaped contour lines converging upstream.
  • Roads and Trails – Thin contour lines represent linear features like roads and trails. They have markings to indicate the type of road, such as paved, gravel, etc.
  • Depressions and Hills - Contour lines forming a closed circle with hatch marks inside represent a depression or basin. The contour lines forming a circle without hatch marks indicate a hill or summit.
  • Index Contours – Thicker contour lines, usually labelled with elevation values, are index contours. They appear at regular intervals and help you understand the general elevation pattern of the area. This information about contour lines is collected through drone land surveys.
