Where We’re Heading and How We’ll Get There…

At Definition Surveying, our purpose is simple: to be the best at surveying. We are survey specialists, not a multidisciplinary company, and that is by design. By focusing solely on surveying, we can deliver the highest value to our clients, partnering with other experts where needed to achieve the best outcomes for every project.

Our strategy is built on delivering exceptional surveying services across Aotearoa, supported by the strength of one national team working together across multiple locations. This combination of local presence and national capability means we can deliver faster, smarter results while maintaining the technical excellence our clients rely on.

What Sets Us Apart

  • One team, multiple locations – we are based across the country, so we’re local where our clients need us, yet connected nationally.
  • Specialist focus – by saying “no” to work outside surveying, we say “yes” to delivering the best results in our field.
  • Collaboration – we partner with other companies to provide the right expertise at the right time, ensuring a best-for-project approach.

The Four Pillars of Our Strategy

  • Client Excellence – clear, consistent delivery that builds trust.
  • Operational Efficiency – robust systems and resource planning.
  • Team Growth and Capability – developing people and leaders at every level.
  • Future-Focused Innovation – using technology and forward planning to stay ahead.

Short term Goals

This year, one of our biggest goals was redesigning our organisational structure to support growth and strengthen leadership. With more projects, more staff, and more complexity, we needed a scalable setup without losing the culture that defines us.

  • Director roles realigned:
    • Anton – Project & Client Director
    • Dan – Technical Director
    • Dave – Managing Director
  • New Team Leaders: Two leadership roles were created through team input and one-on-one feedback. These leaders now handle resourcing, mentoring, professional development, and day-to-day support, freeing Directors to focus strategically.
  • Systems and processes: We’ve embedded tools like Total Synergy for planning, and budgeting, and Growth and Development Plans to give staff ownership of their career development. Weekly resource meetings, monthly reviews, and structured feedback loops keep the strategy active in our day-to-day work.

Our current priorities include:

  • Growing our team across existing locations with a stronger balance of career levels.
  • Reducing Director project load through greater delegation to Team Leaders and senior staff.
  • Improving project data capture for forecasting and pipeline tracking.
  • Strengthening our brand presence and client relationships.

Long term Goals – Growing with Purpose

Looking to 2028, our future model is clear: a scalable team of around 36 people with more Team Leaders, stronger client connections, and clear career pathways supported by individual Growth and Development plans. Shared leadership and ownership across the business will remain at the core of how we operate. We’ll continue to track progress using Synergy reporting, one on ones, and structured performance assessments, adjusting as opportunities and market conditions evolve.

“We’re proud of the foundation we’ve built and the strategy that guides us. Our focus remains on growing with purpose—developing our people, serving our clients with excellence, and strengthening our role as trusted survey specialists across Aotearoa.”
